I got somethin pretty dope in my email earlier this week and it was an early draft of the new joint by Black Spade and Knxwledge. "Spand" finds Spade soulfully singing (say that 5 times fast) in the front of the song and by the end he's spitting his signature, social-commentative lyrics over Knxwledge's fittingly soulful beat. Hopefully this is just the beginning of many more collabs to come from the two artists!

With "The Storm", TJ goes off deep into the galaxy of spacey soul courtesy of a futuristic head-nodder from Black Spade. We begin with an auto-tuned TJ only to be greeted with her powerful raw vocals shortly thereafter and throughout. Black Spade's beats and TJ's voice are definitely an awesome combo not to be slept on.

I'm so lucky to have awesome friends to put me on to new music! Major shout to the homie Chinyere for putting in a request for this wonderfully quirky artist from New Zealand named Kimbra I hadn't known about. After researching, I see why she digs the track. The original is a soulful delight complete with handclaps and a funky rhythm that comes in a bit later in the song. The remix by Neon-Gold artist Penguin Prison is stripped down and brings the tempo up to total dance-floor proportions. Either version, I'm digging Kimbra and I think you will too.

Miguel arrived on the scene last year with his soulful and drum-heavy nodder "All I Want Is You". Since then, he's been touring with Usher and releasing his next single "Sure Thing". The original is OK at best due to lazy, almost laughable lyrics and the cookie-cutter track. Though J*DaVeY's Brook L'Deau can't do much to improve Miguel's "I'm a this and you can be my that" verses, he infuses his signature spacey, forward-thinking synth-soul aesthetic to help you focus on the musicality of it all.

Havana "Repeat Offender"

I first discovered Havana through a 12" single I happened to come across at some random record store over 5 years ago. It was the standard 2-song package complete with instrumentals. Though I hadn't heard of the singer, I noticed the producer credited for both tracks. The one and only Nicolay of The Foreign Exchange was the man behind the beats and with that, I was sold. Needless to say, I not only dug the beats, I really dug Havana's voice as well. So much so that I featured both joints on volume 5 of my Jazzyphatnappy mixtape series. WELL, fast-foward to the current state of things and I find myself digging Ms. Havana once again! Here we are blessed with "Repeat Offender", an up-tempo groover described by the songstress herself as "someone telling you the same thing over and over but never following through. Promises aren't meant to be broken.."
